Gijsbert ter Kruimer blasted a shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Dobromir Szarmach having to make a save. Arnout Reekers made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Laureano Primeiro in the 42nd minute of play. In the 45th minute Gijsbert ter Kruimer shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dobromir Szarmach saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.

Dobromir Szarmach made a fantastic save in the 52nd minute, when Gustaaf Groeneveldt sent off a good shot on target. The audience thought a goal was coming when Wim Wilmes got free with Dobromir Szarmach in the 82nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The audience was convinced that Gijsbert ter Kruimer's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Dobromir Szarmach was relentless in the 84th minute of the game. Andres Guardado's late challenge caught a Netherlands's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Gustaaf Groeneveldt could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 94th minute of the match, but Dobromir Szarmach made a huge save. Netherlands's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
