The supporters of Austria booed when DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 3 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mano Dios came out of the goal in the 27th minute to try and stop a shot by Austria's Sandro Galishoff. But to his dismay, Sandro Galishoff quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. After a rather tough play, DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA's Conrado Delfino got a free kick in the 29th minute. Americo Boniel made in the 32nd minute of the game a throw-in that took a bad bounce and was taken care of by Austria's Leonhard Maier. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Generoso Goren in the 35th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Fabio Auer prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 43rd match minute, Austria was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Leonhard Maier to maneuver through the defense. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

Clodoveo Gamus hit a great freekick 51 minutes into the match. A collision led to Austria getting a freekick after 63 minutes play. Fabio Schneider hit a great ball. Fabio Auer showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Emilio Bikendi, who was totally free with the ball in the 64th minute. A collision led to DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA getting a freekick after 66 minutes play. Americo Boniel hit a great ball. Mano Dios made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Fabio Schneider in the 67th minute of play. When Conrado Delfino fell near the penalty area in the 69th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA's protests and gave Conrado Delfino a yellow card for diving instead. Conrado Delfino hit a great freekick 69 minutes into the match. In the 70th minute of the match Sandro Galishoff shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Mano Dios showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. In the 75th minute, Fabio Schneider got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 94th minute Emilio Bikendi shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fabio Auer saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Austria eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
