The Club Atlético de Newell fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Tommy Thompson should have stopped the shot. An unexpectedly hard shot by Richárd Dárdai in the 21st minute of play forced Club Atlético de Newell's goalkeeper Tommy Thompson to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Tommy Thompson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Boldizsár Szabados in the 22nd minute of play. After 23 played minutes Club Atlético de Newell got a freekick which was hit by Tristram Ellerton. Tommy Thompson showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Boldizsár Szabados in the 24th minute of the match. 30 minutes into the match, Club Atlético de Newell's goal looked a bit too open when Richárd Dárdai came free, but Tommy Thompson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Philip Bakewell made a kick off. In the 54th minute, Újlõrincfalva LC's Ferenc Bozsik dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 0-2. Tommy Thompson made a fantastic save in the 57th minute, when Lajos Sárközi sent off a good shot on target. Tommy Thompson showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Boldizsár Szabados, who was totally free with the ball in the 59th minute. The crowd rose to their feet as Richárd Dárdai kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Tommy Thompson. That made the score 0-5 in the 94 minute of play. Tommy Thompson made a fantastic save in the 98th minute, when Ferenc Bozsik sent off a good shot on target. Újlõrincfalva LC played a much better game than Club Atlético de Newell and deserved their victory. The Club Atlético de Newell players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
