Ray Clemence showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Alberigo Sessa, who was totally free with the ball in the 16th minute. SSV Ulm 1846 were awarded a corner in the 18th minute after PHOENIX SC's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Sven-Olof Lilja took the corner. 22 minutes into the match, PHOENIX SC's goal looked a bit too open when Delmiro Jayvier came free, but Ray Clemence reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Ronan McCunn got free with Timo Courtois in the 24th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 29th minute, PHOENIX SC's Ronan McCunn ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Timo Courtois. Timo Courtois yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 3-0. PHOENIX SC's Ray Clemence played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alberigo Sessa in the 52nd minute of play. Timo Courtois took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ronan McCunn, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Stephane Bosch hit a great freekick 68 minutes into the match. After having played for 69 minutes, Frederico Hendrickx managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. PHOENIX SC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Frederico Hendrickx was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Alberigo Sessa in the 72nd minute of play forced PHOENIX SC's goalkeeper Ray Clemence to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The SSV Ulm 1846 fans' excitement grew in the 73rd match minute when SSV Ulm 1846's Don Merlot looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 3-1 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Timo Courtois showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Frederico Hendrickx, who was totally free with the ball in the 76th minute. Alberigo Sessa hit a great freekick 78 minutes into the match.
