GRÊMIO's Sergio Goicoechea proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 4th minute of the match, managed to save GRÊMIO from getting a goal against them. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ulisses Sabóia in the 7th minute of play forced GRÊMIO's goalkeeper Sergio Goicoechea to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. SALIMEN's Ulisses Sabóia got a good chance for a goal in the 10th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After 11 minutes, Ulisses Sabóia made it 1-0 with a short kick to the right side. GRÊMIO's Sergio Goicoechea tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 15th minute Silvério Pinheiro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Elói Miranda saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ulisses Sabóia could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 20th minute of the match, but Sergio Goicoechea made a huge save. 23 minutes into the match, SALIMEN's Ulisses Sabóia sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Sergio Goicoechea narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Ulisses Sabóia's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Sergio Goicoechea read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 25th minute of play. Geovani Teles sent away a hard shot on goal in the 28th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 29 minutes into the game, Aníbal Moura was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. In the 34th minute the ball was on its way in behind GRÊMIO's goalkeeper Sergio Goicoechea, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Elói Miranda showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Abel Pirani in the 36th minute of the match. GRÊMIO's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Aníbal Moura in the 37th minute. The corner went over the outstretched arms of SALIMEN's goalie and right to Silvério Pinheiro. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. SALIMEN's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. SALIMEN were awarded a corner in the 42th minute after GRÊMIO's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Saturnino Gartzea took the corner. After taking down the ball on SALIMEN's corner Saturnino Gartzea fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Sergio Goicoechea quite easily take care of the ball. A collision led to GRÊMIO getting a freekick after 44 minutes play. Luiz Gustavo Mazza hit a great ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Geovani Teles was the one to do the kick off. After some fancy dribbling in the 70th minute, Ulisses Sabóia managed to get in a good position for a shot. SALIMEN's supporters rose to their feet, but Ulisses Sabóia was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Sergio Goicoechea breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. SALIMEN's Ronaldão Novaes was substituted for Enéas Pereira. SALIMEN's İldeniz Davutoğlu was substituted for Ulisses Sabóia. After 72 played minutes SALIMEN got a freekick which was hit by Faustino Gerazan. An unexpectedly hard shot by İldeniz Davutoğlu in the 76th minute of play forced GRÊMIO's goalkeeper Sergio Goicoechea to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 82ndth minute of the game İldeniz Davutoğlu who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but GRÊMIO's Sergio Goicoechea was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. SALIMEN's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
