An unexpectedly hard shot by Claudinei Dantas in the 5th minute of play forced S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After having played for 45 minutes, Leopoldo Sanches managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. S.E.R. Caxias do Sul's supporters crossed their fingers, but Leopoldo Sanches was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Adhemar Pinho made a kick off. A collision led to S.E.R. Caxias do Sul getting a freekick after 51 minutes play. Laranja Mecânica FSCMZ's Cacá Sousa played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Joélson Paraibano in the 61st minute of play. In the 89th minute Lino Freire shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gianluigi Donnarumma saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Many of Laranja Mecânica FSCMZ's supporters were seen to leave the ground early as it became clear their team was going to lose. Laranja Mecânica FSCMZ may have spent more time on the ball, but S.E.R. Caxias do Sul were more willing to take their chances and they walked away with the win.
