Denílson Leão was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Palestra do Interior's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Niclas Danielsson in the 15th minute. A well-hit corner resulted in Moisés Matorin heading the ball towards the goal, but to his dismay he misdirected it and missed the goal completely. Pecém's Denílson Leão played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Vitório Lago in the 19th minute of play. After having played for 27 minutes, Vitório Lago managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Palestra do Interior's supporters crossed their fingers, but Vitório Lago was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Jorginho Ferreira hit a great freekick 32 minutes into the match. In the 36th minute Vitório Lago shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Denílson Leão saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Xie Shu Tian to make the kick off.
