Braulio Lordi made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pipis Karapatakis in the 3rd minute of play. 5 minutes into the match, Grêmio FBPA's goal looked a bit too open when Albino Oso came free, but Jardel Sanches reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Braulio Lordi didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Pipis Karapatakis went, in the 14th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-1 was the resulting score. If Pipis Karapatakis had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 22nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 24 minutes in the game, Pipis Karapatakis dribbled his way through the penalty area and after maneuvering past an opponent, drilled a quick shot at the goal. The ball looked like it was going in, but it was hit a bit too hard and flew over the goal. Jardel Sanches made a fantastic save in the 26th minute, when Agustin Bidun sent off a good shot on target. Jardel Sanches showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Albino Oso, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. Grêmio FBPA's Jardel Sanches played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Agustin Bidun in the 35th minute of play. In the 38th minute, Agustin Bidun got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 42nd minute of the match Grêmio FBPA got a corner. CLUB ATLETICO RIVER PLATE's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Alberto Estevon ran over to the corner to take the kick. Pipis Karapatakis's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Braulio Lordi read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 45th minute of play. The throw-in from Joaquín Ochoa in the 47th minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Grêmio FBPA's Diamantino Cabral. If Pipis Karapatakis had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 48th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Agustin Bidun made a kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by Pipis Karapatakis in the 56th minute of play forced CLUB ATLETICO RIVER PLATE's goalkeeper Braulio Lordi to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Kiril Ivkov fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 59th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jardel Sanches having to interfere. Jardel Sanches came out of the goal in the 61st minute to try and stop a shot by CLUB ATLETICO RIVER PLATE's Agustin Bidun. But to his dismay, Agustin Bidun quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-1. The supporters of Grêmio FBPA booed when CLUB ATLETICO RIVER PLATE was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 65 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fertus Oropesa didn't get a good kick on the ball. If Alejo Montez had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 69th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 73rd minute of the match, Pipis Karapatakis got a very nice opportunity to score, but Braulio Lordi was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Pipis Karapatakis received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 76th minute. Braulio Lordi tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Fertus Oropesa was shown his second yellow card after 78 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. After 79 played minutes CLUB ATLETICO RIVER PLATE got a freekick which was hit by Fertus Oropesa. Alejo Montez recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 83rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After having played for 88 minutes, Eriberto Berger managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Grêmio FBPA's supporters crossed their fingers, but Eriberto Berger was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Eriberto Berger's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 91stth minute, Braulio Lordi skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. In the 96th minute, Juan Pablo Sorin hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field.
