An unexpectedly hard shot by Gustaaf Groeneveldt in the 26th minute of play forced Leones Futbol Club's goalkeeper Mauricio Guillelmus to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 28th minute, Wim Wilmes ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Mauricio Guillelmus was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. After the first half Netherlands were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Gijsbert ter Kruimer to strike the kick off in the second half. Netherlands's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Wilson Dantas was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-3.
