An unexpectedly hard shot by Concetto Maccarone in the 3rd minute of play forced Portugal's goalkeeper Wilson Amorim to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Viriato Moura came up free with the goalie in the 62nd minute, the Portugal fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Viriato Moura couldn't finish the play. Portugal were delighted with the way they had won the match. They had held their defensive line well and made the most of their chances, to claim a victory over Soliera's much stronger midfield.
