An unexpectedly hard shot by Semavi Polat in the 21st minute of play forced Italy's goalkeeper Flavio Vittori to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Italy's Eliseo Cutri managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Leonardo Byström in the 22 minute of the game. Despite being the better team, Italy failed to find the winning goal and were forced to settle for a single point.
