An unexpectedly hard shot by Gustaaf Groeneveldt in the 17th minute of play forced Sport Clube Recife's goalkeeper Percy Fernandez to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 20th minute Wim Wilmes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Percy Fernandez saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 22 played minutes Sport Clube Recife got a freekick which was hit by Nurkan Semdin. The audience thought a goal was coming when Gualter Penha got free with Arnout Reekers in the 23rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Percy Fernandez showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Gustaaf Groeneveldt, who was totally free with the ball in the 25th minute. Arnout Reekers made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Robby Woody in the 31st minute of play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Robby Woody in the 31st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Arnout Reekers saved Netherlands from getting behind. After 31 minutes, Robby Woody made it 2-1 with a short kick to the right side. Netherlands's Arnout Reekers tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. Percy Fernandez showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Gustaaf Groeneveldt, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. 33 minutes into the match, Gustaaf Groeneveldt had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Percy Fernandez. Sport Clube Recife's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Gustaaf Groeneveldt was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-2. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Gijsbert ter Kruimer to strike the kick off in the second half. After a rather tough play, Netherlands's David Eikelkamp got a free kick in the 56th minute. Gijsbert ter Kruimer received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 58th minute. Percy Fernandez tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Arnout Reekers took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Gualter Penha, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Netherlands's Arnout Reekers played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Gualter Penha in the 63rd minute of play. The crowd rose to their feet as Netherlands's Gustaaf Groeneveldt slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Percy Fernandez. That made the score 2-3 after 64 minutes of play. A collision led to Netherlands getting a freekick after 66 minutes play. Egbert Nijveldt hit a great ball. Gijsbert ter Kruimer received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 69th minute. Gustaaf Groeneveldt's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Percy Fernandez firmly grabbed it by the left post. In the 74th minute of the match, Gustaaf Groeneveldt got a very nice opportunity to score, but Percy Fernandez was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. In the 75thth minute of the game Gustaaf Groeneveldt who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Sport Clube Recife's Percy Fernandez was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Gustaaf Groeneveldt could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 78th minute of the match, but Percy Fernandez made a huge save. A collision led to Netherlands getting a freekick after 79 minutes play. Gijsbert ter Kruimer hit a great ball. In the 85th minute Gualter Penha shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Arnout Reekers saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Netherlands's Gijsbert ter Kruimer got a good chance for a goal in the 90th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Percy Fernandez made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Gijsbert ter Kruimer in the 93rd minute of play. Bas Tuitert was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 94 minutes into the match. After 94 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Netherlands! Jeers came from both ends of the stadium when the final whistle went. Neither team had looked impressive and the draw seeemd a fair result.
