Jannes Van Leempoel came out of the goal in the 7th minute to try and stop a shot by Italy's Zaccheo Andolina. But to his dismay, Zaccheo Andolina quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Genk's Jannes Van Leempoel played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Zaccheo Andolina in the 13th minute of play. With a little luck, Italy's Flavio Vittori got control of the ball when Vergil Rupov tried to sneak it across the goal line. Italy's Zaccheo Andolina got a good chance for a goal in the 17th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 19 minutes into the match, Genk's goal looked a bit too open when Zaccheo Andolina came free, but Jannes Van Leempoel reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Italy's Flavio Vittori played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rain De Hond in the 23rd minute of play. Flavio Vittori showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rain De Hond, who was totally free with the ball in the 26th minute. Jannes Van Leempoel made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Zaccheo Andolina in the 32nd minute of play. After some careless play in the Genk defense, Zaccheo Andolina kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Jannes Van Leempoel. The Genk fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Jannes Van Leempoel should have stopped the shot. After a rather tough play, Genk's 邵泉林 got a free kick in the 40th minute. Porziano Marchitelli sent away a hard shot on goal in the 41st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Vergil Rupov could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 43rd minute of the match, but Flavio Vittori made a huge save. In the 46th minute, Segundo Ubendu hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After the first half Italy were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Zaccheo Andolina stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Flavio Vittori stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Rain De Hond's shot from short distance in the 51st minute. 52 minutes into the match, Italy's goal looked a bit too open when Alexander Klemensson came free, but Flavio Vittori reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After some careless play in the Italy defense, Alexander Klemensson kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Flavio Vittori. The Italy fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Flavio Vittori should have stopped the shot. In the 57th minute Zaccheo Andolina shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jannes Van Leempoel saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Zaccheo Andolina could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 78th minute of the match, but Jannes Van Leempoel made a huge save. After having played for 82 minutes, Suat Kaya managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Genk's supporters crossed their fingers, but Suat Kaya was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Genk's Fredrik Creemers was substituted for Ariel Paris. Italy's Guiscardo Davide was substituted for Sigfrido Auletta. In the 84th minute Rain De Hond shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Flavio Vittori saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Vergil Rupov in the 88th minute of play forced Italy's goalkeeper Flavio Vittori to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Porziano Marchitelli came up free with the goalie in the 89th minute, the Italy fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Porziano Marchitelli couldn't finish the play. In the 93rd minute Vergil Rupov shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Flavio Vittori saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The audience was convinced that Vergil Rupov's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Flavio Vittori was relentless in the 93rd minute of the game. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Italy walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
