After some careless play in the Крылья Советов defense, Frank Sachs kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Carlos Germano. The Крылья Советов fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Carlos Germano should have stopped the shot. In the 20th minute of the match Крылья Советов got a corner. Germany's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Damian Kornecki ran over to the corner to take the kick. After taking down the ball on Крылья Советов's corner Damian Kornecki fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Tommy Kahn quite easily take care of the ball. Tommy Kahn stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Yuriy Andronikov's shot from short distance in the 20th minute. After 22 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. Tommy Kahn showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Petre Blajovici in the 35th minute of the match. When Petre Blajovici came up free with the goalie in the 45th minute, the Крылья Советов fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Petre Blajovici couldn't finish the play. After the first half Germany were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Carlos Germano came out of the goal and Frank Sachs tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Carlos Germano made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Frank Sachs in the 57th minute of play.
