The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Teófilo Belém stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Teo Marin's shot from short distance in the 8th minute. GREMIO's Kåre Tolsson played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Severino Ribeiro in the 14th minute of play. In the 16th minute Mykhaylo Slavik shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Teófilo Belém saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Frits Evenhuis in the 22nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Kåre Tolsson prevented the ball from getting in the gole. 23 minutes into the match, GREMIO's goal looked a bit too open when Severino Ribeiro came free, but Kåre Tolsson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 23rd match minute, GREMIO was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Igor Chornyj to maneuver through the defense. Kåre Tolsson showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Severino Ribeiro, who was totally free with the ball in the 26th minute. After 27 minutes GREMIO's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Frits Evenhuis who took care of the corner kick. Kåre Tolsson made a fantastic save in the 31st minute, when Frits Evenhuis sent off a good shot on target. In the 32ndth minute of the game Teo Marin who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but MC ESPANHOL's Teófilo Belém was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Teófilo Belém made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Teo Marin in the 35th minute of play. Dmytro Maschenko kicked well hit freekick during the 36th minute of the match. A collision led to MC ESPANHOL getting a freekick after 38 minutes play. João Gomes hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Teo Marin in the 43rd minute of play forced MC ESPANHOL's goalkeeper Teófilo Belém to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Kåre Tolsson took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Virgílio Serpa, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 55th minute Czeslaw Kaszubik shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Teófilo Belém saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Máximo Palma struck a weak shot in the 56th minute. Kåre Tolsson didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for MC ESPANHOL. Teófilo Belém showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Basilio Ermano in the 63rd minute of the match. 68 minutes into the match, MC ESPANHOL's goalkeeper Teófilo Belém had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Mykhaylo Slavik. After 69 minutes MC ESPANHOL's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Mykhaylo Slavik who took care of the corner kick. It was a well-played corner which Igor Chornyj managed to volley towards the net. Unfortunately, he didn't get a great hit on the ball and it went out into the grandstand. Kåre Tolsson showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Kostas Sourpis, who was totally free with the ball in the 72nd minute. Zenon Kendra hit a great freekick 77 minutes into the match. If Virgílio Serpa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 78th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 79 minutes into the match, GREMIO's goal looked a bit too open when Severino Ribeiro came free, but Kåre Tolsson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Teófilo Belém showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Czeslaw Kaszubik in the 81st minute of the match. In the 83rd minute, MC ESPANHOL's João Gomes seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed João Gomes the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of MC ESPANHOL protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and João Gomes had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 83rd minute of the game. One of MC ESPANHOL:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of GREMIO:s goal. When the match had been going on for 85 minutes, GREMIO's Basilio Ermano got an opportunity to shoot a penalty. He stayed cool and waited for the goalkeeper to move, before he confidently shot the ball into the goal, to the left of Teófilo Belém. A collision led to MC ESPANHOL getting a freekick after 89 minutes play. Severino Ribeiro hit a great ball. 96 minutes into the match, MC ESPANHOL's goal looked a bit too open when Teo Marin came free, but Teófilo Belém reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Mykhaylo Slavik could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 97th minute of the match, but Teófilo Belém made a huge save. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched GREMIO eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
