Independiente's Farid Mondragón played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by David Eikelkamp in the 7th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Kerry Sellers got free with Arnout Reekers in the 9th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 10th minute, Sid Chadwick hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 11th minute, Gustaaf Groeneveldt made a precise shot to the right of Farid Mondragón. C. A. Independiente's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. A sloppy throw-in by Kerry Sellers in the 15th minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by Netherlands's Gustaaf Groeneveldt. Arnout Reekers showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Kerry Sellers, who was totally free with the ball in the 20th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 22nd minute, Gijsbert ter Kruimer managed to get in a good position for a shot. Netherlands's supporters rose to their feet, but Gijsbert ter Kruimer was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Farid Mondragón breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. 24 minutes into the match, C. A. Independiente's goal looked a bit too open when Gustaaf Groeneveldt came free, but Farid Mondragón reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of Netherlands booed when C. A. Independiente was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 26 match minutes in a wonderful position. Tomas Gustafson didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gustaaf Groeneveldt in the 27th minute of play forced C. A. Independiente's goalkeeper Farid Mondragón to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A nice corner shot did that Eric Snowden got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Arnout Reekers quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. C. A. Independiente made a substitution. Tommie Bolton replaced Sidney Forbes. Farid Mondragón made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from David Eikelkamp in the 35th minute of play. After having played for 38 minutes, Gijsbert ter Kruimer managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Netherlands's supporters crossed their fingers, but Gijsbert ter Kruimer was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 40th minute of the match, Kerry Sellers tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Arnout Reekers saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. 46 minutes into the match, Netherlands's goalkeeper Arnout Reekers had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Tommie Bolton. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 1-1 after a close first half.

The wind increased when Gijsbert ter Kruimer made the kick off in the second half. In the 51st minute Gijsbert ter Kruimer shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Farid Mondragón saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Tommie Bolton scored 2-1 in the 52nd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Arnout Reekers, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 58th minute, Kerry Sellers ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Arnout Reekers was frozen by the shot and now it was 3-1. Gijsbert ter Kruimer received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Farid Mondragón came out and tried to block the shot, but Gijsbert ter Kruimer slotted it home off the left post making it 3-2 in the 64th minute. 66 minutes into the match, Kerry Sellers had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Arnout Reekers. Netherlands's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Kerry Sellers was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 4-2. Arnout Reekers showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Sid Chadwick in the 70th minute of the match. Kerry Sellers blasted a shot towards the goal in the 74th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Arnout Reekers having to make a save. In the 74th minute Kerry Sellers shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Arnout Reekers saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 77th minute the ball was on its way in behind C. A. Independiente's goalkeeper Farid Mondragón, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. 79 minutes into the match, C. A. Independiente's goal looked a bit too open when Wim Wilmes came free, but Farid Mondragón reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 80 played minutes Netherlands got a freekick which was hit by Bas Tuitert. If Claudio Marangoni had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 82nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 83 minutes, Erberk Müftüoğlu mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the C. A. Independiente and the Netherlands players grew even worse after the yellow card. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tommie Bolton in the 90th minute of play forced Netherlands's goalkeeper Arnout Reekers to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Arnout Reekers made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Kerry Sellers in the 91st minute of play. Arnout Reekers took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Kerry Sellers, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The C. A. Independiente support was delighted with a win in a match that could easily have ended differently.
