Felipe Porras tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Ronald Huetar in the 8th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Felipe Porras saved San Jose from getting behind. Atenas's Leonel Alpizar got a good chance for a goal in the 11th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After having played for 15 minutes, Leonel Alpizar managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Atenas's supporters crossed their fingers, but Leonel Alpizar was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Paul Cartin took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 22nd minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Felipe Porras. Romulo Lozano made an important save on a dangerous shot by Javier Vanderlat in the 34th minute. In the 38th minute Leonel Alpizar shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Felipe Porras saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. With his leg Romulo Lozano managed to avoid a goal in the 44thth minute, when San Jose's Javier Vanderlat fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Ignacio Orlich hit a great freekick 46 minutes into the match. Atenas's Romulo Lozano played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Salvador Wanchope in the 48th minute of play. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.
