After 15 minutes, Fello Echeverria mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Limon FC and the Atenas players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 15th match minute, Limon FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Fello Echeverria to maneuver through the defense. After some fancy dribbling in the 16th minute, Leonel Alpizar managed to get in a good position for a shot. Atenas's supporters rose to their feet, but Leonel Alpizar was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Adolfo Elizondo breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Adolfo Elizondo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Leonel Alpizar, who was totally free with the ball in the 20th minute. Ignacio Orlich fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 21st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Adolfo Elizondo having to interfere. Romulo Lozano took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Wilmer Ayala, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 33rd minute Ronald Huetar shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Adolfo Elizondo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Pancho Robles charged in rather forcefully in the 35th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. Atenas's Romulo Lozano proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 43rd minute of the match, managed to save Atenas from getting a goal against them. Elias Esquivel's late challenge caught a Limon FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Elias Esquivel helped the player get up and apologised. In the 45th match minute, Atenas was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Elias Esquivel to maneuver through the defense. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-0.

In the 91st minute, Wilmer Ayala got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Limon FC had won after a very even match.
