The supporters of Tortinho booed when Arez was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 34 match minutes in a wonderful position. Thomás Tande didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Arez's zone, Gernando Penha stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Abel Queirós came out of the goal and Gernando Penha tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Danilo Esteves to make the kick off. In the 51st minute, Arez's Danilo Esteves dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-2. With an all-out effort, Arez's Erasmo Hermes threw himself towards the right post 55 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Danilo Esteves, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Ramón Sabóia's late challenge caught a Arez's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. When Alfredo Viana fell near the penalty area in the 71st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick.
