Progresso Paulista's protests and gave William Mattos a yellow card for diving instead. When the match had been going on for 28 minutes, Palestra Itália EC's Germano Ceresso got an opportunity to shoot a penalty. He stayed cool and waited for the goalkeeper to move, before he confidently shot the ball into the goal, to the left of Ulisses Alvarenga. When C.M. Progresso Paulista's José Augusto Amorim, in the 33rd minute, received a pass right in front of the net, it looked like a certain goal, but his shot went outside. A wasted opportunity for C.M. Progresso Paulista. After 37 played minutes Palestra Itália EC got a freekick which was hit by Olavo Dante. Palestra Itália EC's Robinho Hoffmann played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by José Augusto Amorim in the 39th minute of play. After 41 minutes Palestra Itália EC's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Dinei Furlan who took care of the corner kick. Célio Gomes thought of kicking away a contribution in front of goal but messed it up so badly that the ball went to the right of an astonished Robinho Hoffmann, a very annoying self made goal in the 41st minute which led to 1-1. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for José Augusto Amorim to strike the kick off in the second half. If Naldo Tasso had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 51st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 55 minutes into the game, Wilton Sergipano cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 2-1. Ulisses Alvarenga was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. After a rather tough play, Palestra Itália EC's Wilton Sergipano got a free kick in the 58th minute. Ulisses Alvarenga showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Wilton Sergipano, who was totally free with the ball in the 66th minute. Germano Ceresso took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 67th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Ulisses Alvarenga. C.M. Progresso Paulista's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in C.M. Progresso Paulista's zone, Wilton Sergipano stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ulisses Alvarenga came out of the goal and Wilton Sergipano tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Ulisses Alvarenga showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Naldo Tasso, who was totally free with the ball in the 70th minute. José Augusto Amorim sent away a hard shot on goal in the 77th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 87th minute, Wilton Sergipano made a precise shot to the right of Ulisses Alvarenga. C.M. Progresso Paulista's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 3-1. If Naldo Tasso had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 91st minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. 96 minutes into the game, Olavo Dante was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Palestra Itália EC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave C.M. Progresso Paulista the free kick. The supporters of C.M. Progresso Paulista booed when Palestra Itália EC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 97 match minutes in a wonderful position. Olavo Dante didn't get a good kick on the ball. For all the effort they put into the match, the C.M. Progresso Paulista players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Palestra Itália EC.
