After a defensive mix-up in Parana Clube's zone, Valdemar Arantes stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Gilvan Fontes came out of the goal and Valdemar Arantes tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Virgílio Favoretto sent away a hard shot on goal in the 14th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 18th minute Álvaro Cavalcante shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gilvan Fontes saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After having played for 19 minutes, Valdemar Arantes managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. São Paulo's supporters crossed their fingers, but Valdemar Arantes was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Álvaro Cavalcante fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 21st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Gilvan Fontes having to interfere. Gilvan Fontes made an important save on a dangerous shot by Valdemar Arantes in the 22nd minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Diguinho Aguiar in the 26th minute of play forced São Paulo's goalkeeper Valdir Zanette to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Virgílio Favoretto had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 43rd match minute, Parana Clube was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Maurício Magalhães to maneuver through the defense. 46 minutes had been played when some careless play by Parana Clube's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Agnaldo Pinheiro was slow to take the kick. During this time São Paulo's players had a chance to rest. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-0.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Virgílio Favoretto stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. A collision led to Parana Clube getting a freekick after 53 minutes play. Maurício Magalhães hit a great ball. Parana Clube's Gilvan Fontes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Álvaro Cavalcante in the 57th minute of play. Célio Saldanha kicked well hit freekick during the 60th minute of the match. After recieving a nice pass, São Paulo's Agnaldo Pinheiro tried to score from far away in the 61st minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. When São Paulo's Valdemar Arantes in the 69th minute got a chance for a shot 69th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Parana Clube's goalie prevented a goal. When Paulo Aparecido fell near the penalty area in the 75th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. In the 75th minute, Paulo Aparecido hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Valdemar Arantes sent away a hard shot on goal in the 77th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Gilvan Fontes stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Valdemar Arantes's shot from short distance in the 79th minute. When Valdemar Arantes came up free with the goalie in the 83rd minute, the São Paulo fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Valdemar Arantes couldn't finish the play. After having played for 86 minutes, Álvaro Cavalcante managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. São Paulo's supporters crossed their fingers, but Álvaro Cavalcante was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. São Paulo's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
