The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 9th minute the ball was on its way in behind Itajara's goalkeeper Donatello Alagoano, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After a rather tough play, DC UNITED FC's Ramiro Ribeiro got a free kick in the 18th minute. Itajara's Donatello Alagoano played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Márcio de Sousa in the 21st minute of play. Eurico Paiva kicked well hit freekick during the 22nd minute of the match. Donatello Alagoano was in exellent shape and made a fantastic save when he, in the 24th minute of the match, managed to get hold of the ball after a long shot from Angelo Baptista. Donatello Alagoano made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Márcio de Sousa in the 25th minute of play. After having played for 27 minutes, Márcio de Sousa managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. DC UNITED FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Márcio de Sousa was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 32 minutes into the game, DC UNITED FC's Cipriano Valle nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Donatello Alagoano made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-0. After some fancy dribbling in the 41st minute, Márcio de Sousa managed to get in a good position for a shot. DC UNITED FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Márcio de Sousa was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Donatello Alagoano breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Donatello Alagoano showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Márcio de Sousa, who was totally free with the ball in the 44th minute. Donatello Alagoano was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. In the 63rd minute Márcio de Sousa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Donatello Alagoano saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line.
