In the 4th minute of the match Icaissara got a corner. Tuounare's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Vivaldo Linhares ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Icaissara's Vivaldo Linhares to fire away a dangerous shot which João Carlos Neto despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The audience was convinced that Délio Maranhense's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Isaltino Lopes was relentless in the 6th minute of the game. The supporters of Tuounare booed when Icaissara was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Acácio Alvarenga didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 15 minutes, Giuseppe Pinho managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. When Acácio Alvarenga fell near the penalty area in the 16th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Icaissara's protests and gave Acácio Alvarenga a yellow card for diving instead. Icaissara's Isaltino Lopes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Emílio Teixeira in the 19th minute of play. After a defensive mix-up in Icaissara's zone, Emílio Teixeira stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Isaltino Lopes came out of the goal and Emílio Teixeira tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 21st match minute, Tuounare was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Zézinho Pires to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Luís Fernando Zilles in the 24th minute of play forced Tuounare's goalkeeper João Carlos Neto to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 25 minutes into the match, Tuounare's goal looked a bit too open when Giuseppe Pinho came free, but João Carlos Neto reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Luís Fernando Zilles sent away a hard shot on goal in the 26th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 27 played minutes Tuounare got a freekick which was hit by Fábio Barbosa. Giuseppe Pinho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 29th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without João Carlos Neto having to interfere. Luís Fernando Zilles blasted a shot towards the goal in the 30th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without João Carlos Neto having to make a save. Tuounare's João Carlos Neto played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Giuseppe Pinho in the 41st minute of play. In the 42nd match minute, Tuounare was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Zézinho Pires to maneuver through the defense. If Giuseppe Pinho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 44th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Luís Fernando Zilles fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 46th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without João Carlos Neto having to interfere. In the 47th minute, Marcus Toscano hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. João Carlos Neto stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Luís Fernando Zilles's shot from short distance in the 49th minute. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Giuseppe Pinho was the one to do the kick off. João Carlos Neto showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Giuseppe Pinho, who was totally free with the ball in the 56th minute. After 60 played minutes Tuounare got a freekick which was hit by Zézinho Pires. Luís Fernando Zilles might have been able to make a better finish in the 61st minute when he tried to place a hard shot over João Carlos Neto. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Luís Fernando Zilles ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 63rd match minute, Tuounare was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Zézinho Pires to maneuver through the defense. In the 64th match minute Vivaldo Linhares ran free in the middle of the field and shot a long shot which scored behind a totally surprised João Carlos Neto. 0-1. Tuounare's João Carlos Neto played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Giuseppe Pinho in the 67th minute of play. Giuseppe Pinho fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 68th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without João Carlos Neto having to interfere. Emílio Teixeira kicked well hit freekick during the 74th minute of the match. If Emílio Teixeira had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 78th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 83rd minute of the match Júnior Freitas shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Isaltino Lopes showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. In the 85th minute, Zézinho Pires left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Tuounare fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-1. Luís Fernando Zilles could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 91st minute of the match, but João Carlos Neto made a huge save. In the 95th minute, Luís Fernando Zilles got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 96th match minute, Tuounare was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Fábio Barbosa to maneuver through the defense. The second half was just like the first, even and exciting. The match ended in a draw.
