Lorenzo Gomez came free with the goalkeeper in the 9th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Freddy Sergi could save by the left post. 10 minutes into the game, Rompecanillas FC's Ignacio Olando nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Lisandro Amato made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. After a rather tough play, Columbus Crew's Lino Bilintx got a free kick in the 13th minute. 14 minutes into the game, Martin Franco was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Columbus Crew's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Rompecanillas FC the free kick. Rompecanillas FC's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Alberto Maore was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-1. In the 26th minute German Laurentzi shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Lisandro Amato saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Lino Bilintx was astounded when the referee showed him the red card after a seemingly innocent challenge, 41 minutes into the match. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 41st minute of the game. One of Columbus Crew:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Rompecanillas FC:s goal. Claudio Lluc walked up to take care of the penalty kick. He was aiming for the top corner, but the ball went just outside the post. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by German Laurentzi during the 45th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 45th match minute, Rompecanillas FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by German Laurentzi to maneuver through the defense. Freddy Sergi showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Fidel Bide, who was totally free with the ball in the 48th minute. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

When Lorenzo Gomez fell near the penalty area in the 75th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Columbus Crew's protests and gave Lorenzo Gomez a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Columbus Crew getting a freekick after 75 minutes play. Lorenzo Gomez hit a great ball. In the 80th minute of the match Silvio Martinez sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Freddy Sergi skillfully saved the ball. Enrique Hodei's late challenge caught a Columbus Crew's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Enrique Hodei helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Rompecanillas FC's Enrique Hodei got a free kick in the 81st minute. In the 83rd minute German Laurentzi shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Lisandro Amato saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of Columbus Crew booed when Rompecanillas FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 86 match minutes in a wonderful position. German Laurentzi didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 87th minute, Bernardino Min got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Bernardino Min's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Freddy Sergi read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 91st minute of play. Both teams had looked equal from kick-off, and no-one was surprised when the match finally ended in a draw.
