After a defensive mix-up in Manchester United's zone, Jamie Osmond stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Thom Lineker came out of the goal and Jamie Osmond tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Chingford City's Jamie Osmond got a good chance for a goal in the 19th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The supporters of Manchester United booed when Chingford City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. Gordon Bye didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 30th match minute, Manchester United was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Gus Dunn to maneuver through the defense. After 33 played minutes Chingford City got a freekick which was hit by Ken Budden. In the 35th minute of the match Simon Spurgeon shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Glyn Rothwell showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Glyn Rothwell came out of the goal in the 42nd minute to try and stop a shot by Manchester United's Cliff Cox. But to his dismay, Cliff Cox quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Glyn Rothwell tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After 55 played minutes Manchester United got a freekick which was hit by Sean Barraclough. Chingford City's Stuart Culverhouse got a good chance for a goal in the 56th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Thom Lineker showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Stuart Culverhouse in the 59th minute of the match. Cliff Cox fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 60th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Glyn Rothwell having to interfere. Chingford City's Glyn Rothwell played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cliff Cox in the 73rd minute of play. After 74 played minutes Cliff Cox rounded Chingford City's defense and shot a beautiful shot into goal via left pole - 1-2. Stuart Culverhouse fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Thom Lineker having to interfere. Thom Lineker made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Stuart Culverhouse in the 94th minute of play. If Les Mowlem had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 96th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Manchester United were delighted with the way they had won the match. They had held their defensive line well and made the most of their chances, to claim a victory over Chingford City's much stronger midfield.
