After a rather tough play, Highbury and Islington AFC's Terry Bzeu got a free kick in the 6th minute. In the 8thth minute of the game Joey Thurman who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Cleckheaton's Tris Long was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Tris Long dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. The supporters of Highbury and Islington AFC booed when Cleckheaton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dion Busby didn't get a good kick on the ball. 19 minutes into the game, Samuel Blacknell was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Highbury and Islington AFC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Cleckheaton the free kick. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Ashley Webster in the 23rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. When Ivan Grainger came up free with the goalie in the 34th minute, the Highbury and Islington AFC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ivan Grainger couldn't finish the play. In the 35th minute, Terry Bzeu got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Benji Llyod fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 43rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tris Long having to interfere. 46 minutes into the game, Highbury and Islington AFC's Joey Thurman nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Tris Long made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-2. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.
Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Ashley Webster to make the kick off.
