The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Barnes's Rodrigo Maurito played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by David Preto in the 12th minute of play. A collision led to Barnes getting a freekick after 15 minutes play. Afonso Dikaté hit a great ball. In the 16th minute, Afonso Bastos fired a really elegant long shot, but Rodrigo Maurito threw himself and managed to get hold of the ball just in front of the right post. Miguel Ezequiel Niz sent away a hard shot on goal in the 19th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Real Madrid's David Preto in the 29th minute got a chance for a shot 29th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Barnes's goalie prevented a goal. Jorge Malheiro kicked well hit freekick during the 36th minute of the match. After 41 minutes, Jorge Malheiro mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Real Madrid and the Barnes players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 41 played minutes Real Madrid got a freekick which was hit by Jorge Malheiro. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 0-0 after a close first half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. David Preto was the one to do the kick off. The supporters of Real Madrid booed when Barnes was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 54 match minutes in a wonderful position. Paulo Regalado didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ailton Viegas in the 55th minute of play forced Barnes's goalkeeper Rodrigo Maurito to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 58thth minute of the game Pedro Serineu who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Real Madrid's Diamantino Sampaio was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. A collision led to Real Madrid getting a freekick after 60 minutes play. Ailton Viegas hit a great ball. In the 62nd minute Ailton Viegas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rodrigo Maurito saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. David Preto blasted a shot towards the goal in the 64th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Rodrigo Maurito having to make a save. After a defensive mix-up in Barnes's zone, Ailton Viegas stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Rodrigo Maurito came out of the goal and Ailton Viegas tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Diamantino Sampaio showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Pedro Serineu, who was totally free with the ball in the 71st minute. Rodrigo Maurito showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from David Preto in the 73rd minute of the match. 74 minutes into the match, Barnes's goal looked a bit too open when Ailton Viegas came free, but Rodrigo Maurito reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The attack was good, but when David Preto in the 75th minute was about to shoot he didn't kick quite good enough and the ball went high over goal. In the 79th match minute, Barnes was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Rolando Vila-Santa to maneuver through the defense. Rodrigo Maurito came out of the goal in the 82nd minute to try and stop a shot by Real Madrid's David Preto. But to his dismay, David Preto quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-0. After 87 played minutes Real Madrid got a freekick which was hit by Jorge Malheiro. Rodrigo Maurito made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from David Preto in the 91st minute of play. After having played for 93 minutes, Ailton Viegas managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Real Madrid's supporters crossed their fingers, but Ailton Viegas was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Barnes's zone, David Preto stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Rodrigo Maurito came out of the goal and David Preto tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play.
