With a left leg Edmundo Fontão saved Whitby from getting behind. Diamantino Sampaio made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Nuno Ericeira in the 23rd minute of play. 25 minutes into the match, Whitby's goalkeeper Edmundo Fontão had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Ailton Viegas. After 28 minutes, Afonso Bastos mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Real Madrid and the Whitby players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 28 played minutes Real Madrid got a freekick which was hit by Afonso Bastos. After some fancy dribbling in the 47th minute, Ailton Viegas managed to get in a good position for a shot. Real Madrid's supporters rose to their feet, but Ailton Viegas was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Edmundo Fontão breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Nuno Ericeira made a kick off. In the 52nd minute Ailton Viegas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Edmundo Fontão saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Ailton Viegas received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 55th minute. Edmundo Fontão tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere.
