Dương Minh Phượng made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lê Dung in the 26th minute of play. Nghiêm Minh received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 27th minute. Thua Thien-Hue's Dương Minh Phượng played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Nghiêm Minh in the 31st minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Nghiêm Minh in the 34th minute of play forced Thua Thien-Hue's goalkeeper Dương Minh Phượng to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The corner ended in Đoàn Tho almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Thua Thien-Hue's Dương Minh Phượng did a great save. After 38 played minutes Thua Thien-Hue got a freekick which was hit by Nguyễn Tuan. Lê Dung fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 44th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Dương Minh Phượng having to interfere. 45 minutes into the game, Võ Phuc was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Thua Thien-Hue's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Vinh Yen the free kick. After 45 played minutes Thua Thien-Hue got a freekick which was hit by Võ Phuc. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-1.
When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Nguyễn Dinh made a kick off. After 52 minutes, Trần Phuc mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Vinh Yen and the Thua Thien-Hue players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 52nd minute, Trần Phuc hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 54 minutes into the game, Nguyễn Tan was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Vinh Yen's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Thua Thien-Hue the free kick. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 53rd minute of the game. One of Vinh Yen:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Thua Thien-Hue:s goal. In the 62nd minute, one of Vinh Yen:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Vinh Yen. Nguyễn Loc, 72 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. After a rather tough play, Thua Thien-Hue's Nguyễn Huỳnh got a free kick in the 76th minute. Dương Minh Phượng made a fantastic save in the 77th minute, when Nghiêm Minh sent off a good shot on target. In the 79th minute of the match, Trần Hong tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Dương Minh Phượng saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. Dương Minh Phượng made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-2. In the 100th minute, one of Thua Thien-Hue:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Thua Thien-Hue. Vinh Yen's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
