Aquilino Gonsalve fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 15th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tommy Kahn having to interfere. After 18 played minutes Germany got a freekick which was hit by Chris Mergenthaler. After some fancy dribbling in the 20th minute, Frank Sachs managed to get in a good position for a shot. Germany's supporters rose to their feet, but Frank Sachs was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Delmar Vermudo breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
