Catarino Correia's late challenge caught a Sydney FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Catarino Correia helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Sydney FC booed when Garanhão do SUL was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Catarino Correia didn't get a good kick on the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Thorben Rittmann in the 23rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Joel Maciel prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Gaspar Valadão's late challenge caught a Sydney FC's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. After 23 played minutes Garanhão do SUL got a freekick which was hit by Gaspar Valadão. 25 minutes into the game, Richard Clemens was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sydney FC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Garanhão do SUL the free kick. When Bartolomeo Heinlein came up free with the goalie in the 44th minute, the Sydney FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Bartolomeo Heinlein couldn't finish the play. In the 47th minute, Cássio Madeira made a precise shot to the right of Axel Ballhaus. Sydney FC's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-3.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Gonçalo Lobo to make the kick off.
