The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. The supporters of Kashima Antlers booed when UFC STEAUA was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 2 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dorin Cercelescu didn't get a good kick on the ball. If Hicham Djamel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 3rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 7 minutes, Hermengildo Jobo made it 0-1 with a short kick to the right side. Kashima Antlers's Farès Zarabi tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. After a defensive mix-up in Kashima Antlers's zone, Florin Arsenescu stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Farès Zarabi came out of the goal and Florin Arsenescu tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Farès Zarabi didn't succeed to prevent the ball from going into goal when UFC STEAUA's Hermengildo Jobo shot an unexpected shot in the crossbar's under edge and made 0-2 in the ordered_time% minute. Nelson Mendoza received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 19th minute. Farès Zarabi tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Hicham Djamel's late challenge caught a UFC STEAUA's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Hicham Djamel helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of UFC STEAUA booed when Kashima Antlers was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 20 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hicham Djamel didn't get a good kick on the ball. 21 minutes into the game, UFC STEAUA's Hermengildo Jobo nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Farès Zarabi made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-3. A collision led to Kashima Antlers getting a freekick after 24 minutes play. Faouzi Boniche hit a great ball. 25 minutes into the match, UFC STEAUA's Hermengildo Jobo sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Farès Zarabi narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Nelson Mendoza recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 27th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Farès Zarabi came out of the goal in the 30th minute to try and stop a shot by UFC STEAUA's Nistor Fenici. But to his dismay, Nistor Fenici quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-4. After some careless play in the Kashima Antlers defense, Nelson Mendoza kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Farès Zarabi. The Kashima Antlers fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Farès Zarabi should have stopped the shot. 38 minutes into the match, UFC STEAUA's goalkeeper Costică Petran had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Hicham Djamel. The supporters of UFC STEAUA booed when Kashima Antlers was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 39 match minutes in a wonderful position. Slimane Kraouche didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 40 played minutes, UFC STEAUA's Hermengildo Jobo shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Farès Zarabi came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in UFC STEAUA reached it. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by 孔响浩 during the 41st minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Costică Petran took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Faouzi Boniche, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Mugur Basarabescu hit a great freekick 45 minutes into the match. After having played for 46 minutes, Hicham Djamel managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Kashima Antlers's supporters crossed their fingers, but Hicham Djamel was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Disappointed in the 0-5 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

A hard shot by Florin Arsenescu from long distance, 60 minutes into the match, got Farès Zarabi's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. With splendid footwork Hermengildo Jobo arrived in front of goal to shoot 1-6 by the left pole in the game's 62nd minute. During the 67th minute of the match Hicham Djamel completely mistimed his tackle and brought down his opponent. The referee gave Hicham Djamel a yellow card, his second in the match, which meant he could no longer take part in the game. Hicham Djamel hit a great freekick 67 minutes into the match. When Mugur Nisipeanu fell near the penalty area in the 72nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored UFC STEAUA's protests and gave Mugur Nisipeanu a yellow card for diving instead. Mugur Nisipeanu kicked well hit freekick during the 73rd minute of the match. Farès Zarabi made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Nelson Mendoza in the 84th minute of play. In the 85th minute of the match, Nistor Fenici tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Farès Zarabi saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. When the match clock showed 87 minutes, the score became 1-7 when Hermengildo Jobo sped through Kashima Antlers's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Farès Zarabi. UFC STEAUA's Nelson Mendoza got a good chance for a goal in the 89th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Hermengildo Jobo in the 93rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Farès Zarabi saved Kashima Antlers from getting behind. 94 minutes into the match, Kashima Antlers's goal looked a bit too open when Hermengildo Jobo came free, but Farès Zarabi reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
