The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Nichol Greenan during the 4th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The audience was convinced that Monty Chester's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Jerrard Muller was relentless in the 5th minute of the game. Ceres FC's Jason Wyatt played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Nichol Greenan in the 13th minute of play. The audience was convinced that Nichol Greenan's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Jason Wyatt was relentless in the 16th minute of the game. After some fancy dribbling in the 20th minute, Rhett Shaffer managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ceres FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Rhett Shaffer was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jerrard Muller breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Travis Terry charged in rather forcefully in the 23rd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Travis Terry the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. A collision led to Ceres FC getting a freekick after 23 minutes play. Travis Terry hit a great ball. When Nichol Greenan came up free with the goalie in the 26th minute, the Wellington Phoenix fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Nichol Greenan couldn't finish the play. When the match had gone on for 27 minutes, Monty Chester took a quick shot and it went in 1-1 without a chance for Jerrard Muller to make any attempt to save it. When the match clock showed 33 minutes, the score became 1-2 when Nichol Greenan sped through Ceres FC's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Jason Wyatt. After 40 minutes, Rod Pears mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Wellington Phoenix and the Ceres FC players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 40 played minutes Wellington Phoenix got a freekick which was hit by Rod Pears. When Nichol Greenan was, once again, overly rough in his play he received his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. 45 minutes had been played. In the 46th match minute, Wellington Phoenix was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nichol Greenan to maneuver through the defense.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Edison Claringbold to strike the kick off in the second half. When the match clock showed 54 minutes, the score became 2-2 when Monty Chester sped through Wellington Phoenix's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Jerrard Muller. When the match had gone on for 60 minutes, Edison Claringbold took a quick shot and it went in 2-3 without a chance for Jason Wyatt to make any attempt to save it. Preston Foley struck a weak shot in the 65th minute. Jason Wyatt didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Wellington Phoenix. When the referee blew the final whistle, you could see the dissatisfaction in the Wellington Phoenix players' eyes. They were disappointed they hadn't taken more from the game.
