The crowd rose to their feet as Luiz Fábio Montenegro kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Zbigniew Kalinowski. That made the score 2-1 in the 53 minute of play. Frédson Veiga received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 60th minute. Zbigniew Kalinowski tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 90th match minute, Newcastle United was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Stanislaw Giertych to maneuver through the defense. The supporters of Inter de Melão booed when Newcastle United was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 92 match minutes in a wonderful position. Juliusz Milko didn't get a good kick on the ball. Inter de Melão's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
