In the 3rd minute Aqil Mövsümov shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Stepan Firago saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Şair Baloğlanov fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 8th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Stepan Firago having to interfere. Mänsur Rzayev showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Svetaslav Yanchyk, who was totally free with the ball in the 10th minute. The supporters of Belarus booed when Azerbaijan was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Häsrät Azamämmädov didn't get a good kick on the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 14th minute, Svetaslav Navojka managed to get in a good position for a shot. Belarus's supporters rose to their feet, but Svetaslav Navojka was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Mänsur Rzayev breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Azerbaijan's Mänsur Rzayev played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Svetaslav Yanchyk in the 16th minute of play. Patap Rebryn took a chance and fired a shot far from the goal in the 26th minute, but it turned out to be a dangerous situation for Mänsur Rzayev. Azerbaijan's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. In the 27th minute, Belarus's Zenon Mikulchik ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Mänsur Rzayev. Mänsur Rzayev yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-1. Svetaslav Yanchyk took the ball and in the 32 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Mänsur Rzayev. Mänsur Rzayev dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-1. The supporters of Belarus booed when Azerbaijan was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 36 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mehran Utandıbalayev didn't get a good kick on the ball. A sloppy throw-in by Qaryağdı Isayev in the 43rd minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by Belarus's Petr Lykov. Mänsur Rzayev made an important save on a dangerous shot by Svetaslav Yanchyk in the 44th minute. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-1.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Aqil Mövsümov to make the kick off. In the 51st minute, Svetaslav Navojka ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Mänsur Rzayev was frozen by the shot and now it was 3-1. An unexpectedly hard shot by Zenon Mikulchik in the 55th minute of play forced Azerbaijan's goalkeeper Mänsur Rzayev to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 59 minutes into the match, Azerbaijan's goal looked a bit too open when Svetaslav Yanchyk came free, but Mänsur Rzayev reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After having played for 61 minutes, Häsrät Azamämmädov managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Azerbaijan's supporters crossed their fingers, but Häsrät Azamämmädov was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Marat Lebedev's late challenge caught a Azerbaijan's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Marat Lebedev helped the player get up and apologised. Marat Lebedev hit a great freekick 63 minutes into the match. With a little luck, Belarus's Stepan Firago got control of the ball when Aqil Mövsümov tried to sneak it across the goal line. Mänsur Rzayev took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Svetaslav Yanchyk, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 68th minute, Svetaslav Yanchyk made a precise shot to the right of Mänsur Rzayev. Azerbaijan's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 4-1. After 75 played minutes Azerbaijan got a freekick which was hit by Mehran Utandıbalayev. Belarus made a substitution. Yuriy Ishyk replaced Pilip Mikhailov. In the 80th match minute, Azerbaijan was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Müşfiq Ähäcanov to maneuver through the defense. When Belarus's Svetaslav Yanchyk in the 81st minute got a chance for a shot 81st didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Azerbaijan's goalie prevented a goal. Belarus were awarded a corner in the 83th minute after Azerbaijan's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Patap Rebryn took the corner. The corner led Belarus's Patap Rebryn to fire away a dangerous shot which Mänsur Rzayev despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Gündüz Haqverdiyev sent away a hard shot on goal in the 85th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a defensive mix-up in Belarus's zone, Häsrät Azamämmädov stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Stepan Firago came out of the goal and Häsrät Azamämmädov tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. It was no surprise that this one had ended in a win for the home team. Belarus had played much better football throughout.
