Estrela Solitária's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Álvaro Neiva in the 4th minute. The corner led Estrela Solitária's Álvaro Neiva to fire away a dangerous shot which Júlio Catarinense despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. In the 6th minute Luís Fernando Proença shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Júlio Catarinense saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Teodoro Meirelles kicked well hit freekick during the 10th minute of the match. Váldson Aguiar charged in rather forcefully in the 14th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Váldson Aguiar the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 14th minute, Váldson Aguiar hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Júlio Catarinense took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Luís Fernando Proença, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 19 minutes into the match, REAL VASCO RIO's goal looked a bit too open when Fernandão Queirós came free, but Júlio Catarinense reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of REAL VASCO RIO booed when Estrela Solitária was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 21 match minutes in a wonderful position. Váldson Aguiar didn't get a good kick on the ball. Mário Quirino made a fantastic save in the 23rd minute, when Fred Marinho sent off a good shot on target. A nice corner shot did that José Pedro Simão got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Mário Quirino quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. 28 minutes into the match, REAL VASCO RIO's goal looked a bit too open when Enio Travassos came free, but Júlio Catarinense reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 34 minutes, Luciano Leão mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the REAL VASCO RIO and the Estrela Solitária players grew even worse after the yellow card. A collision led to REAL VASCO RIO getting a freekick after 34 minutes play. Luciano Leão hit a great ball. In the 36th minute Enio Travassos shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Júlio Catarinense saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 37th minute, Enio Travassos left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Estrela Solitária fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. In the 45th match minute, REAL VASCO RIO was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Caco de Souza to maneuver through the defense. After the first half Estrela Solitária were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

In the 53rd minute, Horácio Damião ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Mário Quirino was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. After 60 played minutes Estrela Solitária got a freekick which was hit by Ronaldo Vidal. In the 63rd match minute, REAL VASCO RIO was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Alfredo Fernandes to maneuver through the defense. 64 minutes into the game, Fred Marinho was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. REAL VASCO RIO's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Estrela Solitária the free kick. A collision led to REAL VASCO RIO getting a freekick after 64 minutes play. Fred Marinho hit a great ball. Júlio Catarinense made an important save on a dangerous shot by Fernandão Queirós in the 70th minute. When REAL VASCO RIO's Alfredo Fernandes in the 71st minute got a chance for a shot 71st didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Estrela Solitária's goalie prevented a goal. In the 74th minute, Teodoro Meirelles got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Enio Travassos scored 1-2 in the 75th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Júlio Catarinense, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. 79 minutes into the game, Teodoro Meirelles was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Estrela Solitária's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave REAL VASCO RIO the free kick. A collision led to Estrela Solitária getting a freekick after 79 minutes play. Teodoro Meirelles hit a great ball. When Luís Fernando Proença came up free with the goalie in the 83rd minute, the Estrela Solitária fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Luís Fernando Proença couldn't finish the play. After 91 played minutes REAL VASCO RIO got a freekick which was hit by Marcinho Velloso. In the 92nd minute the ball was on its way in behind REAL VASCO RIO's goalkeeper Júlio Catarinense, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After a defensive mix-up in Estrela Solitária's zone, Horácio Damião stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Mário Quirino came out of the goal and Horácio Damião tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The Estrela Solitária supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Estrela Solitária would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
