When Luisão Proença fell near the penalty area in the 22nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Ballarz's protests and gave Luisão Proença a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Recife Pe booed when Ballarz was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. Luisão Proença didn't get a good kick on the ball. Nelson Brito didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 32 minutes, Umberto Félix managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Ballarz's supporters crossed their fingers, but Umberto Félix was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Benedito Silva received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 40th minute. Lenílson Magalhães tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 44 minutes into the game, José Carlos Pontes was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Recife Pe's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Ballarz the free kick. José Carlos Pontes hit a great freekick 44 minutes into the match. In the 46th minute Zé Carlos Lucas shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Tomás Berger saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The audience was convinced that Umberto Félix's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Tomás Berger was relentless in the 47th minute of the game.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Zé Carlos Lucas to strike the kick off in the second half. Reynaldo Baiano charged in rather forcefully in the 51st minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Reynaldo Baiano the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. A collision led to Ballarz getting a freekick after 51 minutes play. Reynaldo Baiano hit a great ball. After recieving a nice pass, Recife Pe's Ademar Prado tried to score from far away in the 52nd minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. In the 53rd minute, Toninho Rossi hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Zé Carlos Lucas recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 58th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Umberto Félix fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 59th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tomás Berger having to interfere. Recife Pe's Benedito Silva got a good chance for a goal in the 62nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Tomás Berger made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Zé Carlos Lucas in the 66th minute of play. When Benedito Silva came up free with the goalie in the 68th minute, the Recife Pe fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Benedito Silva couldn't finish the play. Hílton Trevisan struck a weak shot in the 70th minute. Lenílson Magalhães didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Recife Pe. Lenílson Magalhães took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Benedito Silva, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. If Benedito Silva had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 78th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When Zé Carlos Lucas came up free with the goalie in the 87th minute, the Ballarz fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Zé Carlos Lucas couldn't finish the play. In the 95th minute, Benedito Silva got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Ballarz walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
