After a rather tough play, Vélez Juniors's Fidel Pietro got a free kick in the 10th minute. In the 11th minute, Fidel Pietro hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In a very dangerous position, a player in Vélez Juniors fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 12th minute. Penalty! Alfredo Hinguanzo placed the ball on the penalty spot and got himself ready to shoot. Post out! Ulises Sandaili made an important save on a dangerous shot by Patricio Alvarado in the 16th minute. Flavio Lugo charged in rather forcefully in the 24th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Flavio Lugo the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of GuateFortín booed when Vélez Juniors was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 24 match minutes in a wonderful position. Flavio Lugo didn't get a good kick on the ball. GuateFortín's Miguel Marin played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Amancio Godoy in the 26th minute of play. Miguel Marin took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Fidel Pietro, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Alfredo Hinguanzo kicked well hit freekick during the 30th minute of the match. In the 32nd minute Amancio Godoy shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Miguel Marin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 33rd minute, Alfredo Hinguanzo hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 34 played minutes, Vélez Juniors's Arnulfo Confesor shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Miguel Marin came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Vélez Juniors reached it. When Fidel Pietro came up free with the goalie in the 39th minute, the Vélez Juniors fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Fidel Pietro couldn't finish the play. Miguel Marin made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Guaberto Maraman in the 43rd minute of play. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Guaberto Maraman to make the kick off.
