An unexpectedly hard shot by Murray Schmitz in the 67th minute of play forced Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper Dante Fernendo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Sporting de Gijón were furious when Constantino Nuno was red carded, 67 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. Sporting de Gijón made a substitution. Mario Zanabria replaced Alejandro Rufo.
