After a defensive mix-up in Granate's zone, Lothaire Maddox stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Donato Lorenz came out of the goal and Lothaire Maddox tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. When Sidney Cavazos came up free with the goalie in the 6th minute, the Club Atlético Lanús fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Sidney Cavazos couldn't finish the play. In the 9th minute Christos Triantafyllou shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fernando Navarro Montoya saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 12 minutes into the match, Granate's goal looked a bit too open when Murray Schmitz came free, but Donato Lorenz reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Club Atlético Lanús's Fernando Navarro Montoya proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 15th minute of the match, managed to save Club Atlético Lanús from getting a goal against them. Christos Triantafyllou kicked well hit freekick during the 16th minute of the match. In the 17th minute, Donato Lekubegi hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Fernando Navarro Montoya made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Christos Triantafyllou in the 24th minute of play. A collision led to Granate getting a freekick after 25 minutes play. Luisito Estevon hit a great ball. With an all-out effort, Granate's Fernando Navarro Montoya threw himself towards the right post 27 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Christos Triantafyllou, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lothaire Maddox in the 31st minute of play forced Granate's goalkeeper Donato Lorenz to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Fernando Navarro Montoya made an important save on a dangerous shot by Christos Triantafyllou in the 34th minute. If Lothaire Maddox had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 36th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 50 played minutes Granate got a freekick which was hit by Donato Lekubegi. In the 54th minute Lothaire Maddox shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Donato Lorenz saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 55 minutes had been played when some careless play by Granate's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Garfield Watson was slow to take the kick. During this time Club Atlético Lanús's players had a chance to rest. Eriberto Olando hit a great ball. The Club Atlético Lanús supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Club Atlético Lanús would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
