Alberigo Sessa showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 2-0. Jacek Matuch made an important save on a dangerous shot by Don Merlot in the 32nd minute. If Éthan Pichard had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Timo Courtois took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jurek Ohrem, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The supporters of SV Bad Harzburg booed when SSV Ulm 1846 was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 44 match minutes in a wonderful position. Alberigo Sessa didn't get a good kick on the ball. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-0 at half-time.
