Gervásio Vilhena didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Sport Açores e Benfica's zone, Cláudio Balsemão stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sérgio Viegas came out of the goal and Cláudio Balsemão tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After 6 minutes, Gervásio Vilhena mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Sport Açores e Benfica and the Garanhão do SUL players grew even worse after the yellow card. Sérgio Viegas took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cláudio Balsemão, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Leonel Messi's late challenge caught a Sport Açores e Benfica's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Leonel Messi helped the player get up and apologised. After some fancy dribbling in the 13th minute, Samuel Salgueiro managed to get in a good position for a shot. Sport Açores e Benfica's supporters rose to their feet, but Samuel Salgueiro was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Heitor Peseiro breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Heitor Peseiro made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from David Soveral in the 15th minute of play. Sérgio Viegas showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cláudio Balsemão, who was totally free with the ball in the 16th minute. Gervásio Vilhena fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 18th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Heitor Peseiro having to interfere. The audience thought a goal was coming when António Gama got free with Sérgio Viegas in the 32nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cláudio Balsemão in the 33rd minute of play forced Sport Açores e Benfica's goalkeeper Sérgio Viegas to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Cláudio Balsemão received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Sérgio Viegas came out and tried to block the shot, but Cláudio Balsemão slotted it home off the left post making it 1-2 in the 38th minute. Sérgio Viegas made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from António Gama in the 42nd minute of play. 43 minutes into the match, Sport Açores e Benfica's goal looked a bit too open when Cláudio Balsemão came free, but Sérgio Viegas reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 45th minute, António Gama got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. If David Soveral had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After the first half Sport Açores e Benfica were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Cláudio Balsemão was the one to do the kick off. Garanhão do SUL's André Roriz got a good chance for a goal in the 51st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. They had won a fair victory and recieved the ovations of their fans.
