The supporters of Humildes booed when Mambure was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 12 match minutes in a wonderful position. Nilmar Barreto didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Cesinha Carioca in the 17th minute of play forced Humildes's goalkeeper Aluísio Oliveira to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 18th match minute, Humildes was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by João Francisco Mello to maneuver through the defense. Mambure's Aníbal Souto got a good chance for a goal in the 18th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Humildes's Aluísio Oliveira played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cesinha Carioca in the 20th minute of play. Cesinha Carioca blasted a shot towards the goal in the 26th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Aluísio Oliveira having to make a save. César Lima's late challenge caught a Mambure's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. César Lima helped the player get up and apologised. César Lima hit a great freekick 27 minutes into the match. In the 29th minute Cesinha Carioca shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Aluísio Oliveira saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. When Moisés Brodel came up free with the goalie in the 40th minute, the Humildes fans jumped to their feet. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 44 minutes into the match, Mambure's Aníbal Souto sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Aluísio Oliveira narrowly saved just below the crossbar. If Mauro Travassos had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 46th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Moisés Brodel fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 48th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Oséas Tepedino having to interfere. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.
When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Cesinha Carioca made a kick off. Cesinha Carioca fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 56th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Aluísio Oliveira having to interfere. The attack was good, but when Cesinha Carioca in the 58th minute was about to shoot he didn't kick quite good enough and the ball went high over goal. When João Francisco Mello fell near the penalty area in the 63rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Humildes's protests and gave João Francisco Mello a yellow card for diving instead. The audience was convinced that Aníbal Souto's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Aluísio Oliveira was relentless in the 64th minute of the game.
