When Wilton Simões fell near the penalty area in the 13th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored SANTOS FC's protests and gave Wilton Simões a yellow card for diving instead. After 13 played minutes SANTOS FC got a freekick which was hit by Wilton Simões. In the 14th minute, Fernandinho Soares got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Fernandinho Soares sent away a hard shot on goal in the 18th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Fernandinho Soares fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 21st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Luciano Cardoso having to interfere. If Fernandinho Soares had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 37th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. 40 minutes into the match, Fernandinho Soares had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Luciano Cardoso. SANTOS FC's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Fernandinho Soares was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. Fernandinho Meirelles showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Vicente Teles in the 61st minute of the match. With a little luck, SANTOS FC's Luciano Cardoso got control of the ball when Cícero Bittencourt tried to sneak it across the goal line. During the 76th minute of the match Wilton Simões completely mistimed his tackle and brought down his opponent. The referee gave Wilton Simões a yellow card, his second in the match, which meant he could no longer take part in the game. If Cícero Bittencourt had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 90th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The Corinthians supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Corinthians would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
