An unexpectedly hard shot by Cláudio Pires in the 17th minute of play forced Leões Potiguares's goalkeeper Lenílson Negri to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Cariacica's Nando Pena played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Teodoro Cavalcante in the 22nd minute of play. If Teodoro Cavalcante had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 24th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Washington Trancoso charged in rather forcefully in the 26th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Washington Trancoso the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 26th match minute, Cariacica was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Washington Trancoso to maneuver through the defense. Amílton Garcia kicked well hit freekick during the 29th minute of the match. After 31 minutes, Washington Mazza mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Leões Potiguares and the Cariacica players grew even worse after the yellow card. When Enrique Bueno fell near the penalty area in the 46th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Leões Potiguares's protests and gave Enrique Bueno a yellow card for diving instead. In the 46th minute, Enrique Bueno hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Cafu Cardozo was the one to do the kick off. Cláudio Pires came free in the 55th minute and tried to tip the ball over Lenílson Negri, but to the joy of Leões Potiguares's supporters the ball went over. If Gugu de Carvalho had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 59th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The corner ended in Laerte Urbano almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Leões Potiguares's Lenílson Negri did a great save. If Washington Mazza had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 67th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Cláudio Pires recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 70th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Lenílson Negri took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Cláudio Pires, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Cafu Cardozo blasted a shot towards the goal in the 92nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Lenílson Negri having to make a save. Neither set of supporters seemed pleased with the draw, but both teams had played equally well today.
