The Sambaitiba fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Walmir Novaes should have stopped the shot. Lenílson Simão fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 22nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Walmir Novaes having to interfere. Cido Peixoto hit a great freekick 23 minutes into the match. After 24 played minutes, Paulo Afonso's Eliseu Hermes shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Walmir Novaes came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Paulo Afonso reached it. Paulo Afonso's Breno Castro proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 25th minute of the match, managed to save Paulo Afonso from getting a goal against them. Breno Castro showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Luís Paulo Travassos in the 27th minute of the match. 29 minutes into the game, Ulisses Vinhas was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sambaitiba's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Paulo Afonso the free kick. Walmir Novaes took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Nuno Cearense, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 36 minutes into the match, Sambaitiba's goal looked a bit too open when Fred da Cunha came free, but Walmir Novaes reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 39thth minute of the game Fred da Cunha who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Sambaitiba's Walmir Novaes was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After 42 minutes, José Augusto de Queiroz mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Sambaitiba and the Paulo Afonso players grew even worse after the yellow card. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Luís Paulo Travassos to make the kick off. Paulo Afonso's Breno Castro played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Durvalino Recife in the 51st minute of play. Luís Paulo Travassos scored 1-1 in the 53rd match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Breno Castro, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. After 62 played minutes Sambaitiba got a freekick which was hit by Válter Lara. Walmir Novaes showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Lenílson Simão, who was totally free with the ball in the 69th minute. Fred da Cunha's late challenge caught a Sambaitiba's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Fred da Cunha helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Sambaitiba booed when Paulo Afonso was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 73 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fred da Cunha didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 77th minute, Nuno Cearense got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Fred da Cunha fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 83rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Walmir Novaes having to interfere. Fred da Cunha received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 85th minute. Walmir Novaes tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. If Lenílson Simão had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 89th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead.
