Jailson Martins could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 6th minute of the match, but Zé Paulo Esteves made a huge save. 11 minutes into the match, Vasco da Gama's goal looked a bit too open when Alex Aparecido came free, but Zé Paulo Esteves reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Zé Paulo Esteves made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Moisés Vidal in the 14th minute of play. Vasco da Gama's Zé Paulo Esteves played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alex Aparecido in the 16th minute of play. In the 16th minute, Andrézinho Lima hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Severino Andrade's late challenge caught a Vasco da Gama's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Severino Andrade helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Tubarello's Severino Andrade got a free kick in the 18th minute. Wiliam Souza received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 19th minute. Franklin Xavier tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Franklin Xavier made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Carlos Torres in the 21st minute of play. The supporters of Vasco da Gama booed when Tubarello was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 21 match minutes in a wonderful position. Moisés Vidal didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a rather tough play, Vasco da Gama's Bruno Guimarães got a free kick in the 23rd minute. Tubarello's Alex Aparecido got a good chance for a goal in the 24th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 26th minute, Carlos Torres managed to get in a good position for a shot. Vasco da Gama's supporters rose to their feet, but Carlos Torres was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Franklin Xavier breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Alex Aparecido sent away a hard shot on goal in the 30th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 31st match minute, Vasco da Gama was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Cido Maranhense to maneuver through the defense. The supporters of Vasco da Gama booed when Tubarello was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 34 match minutes in a wonderful position. Zé Augusto Chaves didn't get a good kick on the ball. Cláudio Meira could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 52nd minute of the match, but Franklin Xavier made a huge save. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Wiliam Souza in the 66th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Franklin Xavier prevented the ball from getting in the gole. After having played for 69 minutes, Jailson Martins managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Tubarello's supporters crossed their fingers, but Jailson Martins was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Zé Paulo Esteves took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Alex Aparecido, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Alex Aparecido in the 81st minute of play forced Vasco da Gama's goalkeeper Zé Paulo Esteves to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 90 minutes into the match, Vasco da Gama's goal looked a bit too open when Jailson Martins came free, but Zé Paulo Esteves reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
