In the 9th minute Claes Backman shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dida Taffarel saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Délio de Barros who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 18thth minute tested the skills of Dida Taffarel when he managed to save the team from getting behind. In the 20th minute, Catanduvense FC's Claes Backman ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Dida Taffarel. Dida Taffarel yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 2-0. Genílson Cardozo hit a great freekick 24 minutes into the match. In the 25th minute Paulinho Afonso shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dida Taffarel saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 34 minutes into the game, Catanduvense FC's Délio de Barros nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Dida Taffarel made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-0. Délio de Barros received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 37th minute. Dida Taffarel tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Verneque FC's Dida Taffarel played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Paulinho Afonso in the 38th minute of play. In the 41st minute of the match, Délio de Barros got a very nice opportunity to score, but Dida Taffarel was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. With a little luck, Verneque FC's Dida Taffarel got control of the ball when Claes Backman tried to sneak it across the goal line. Délio de Barros recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 44th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Dida Taffarel made a fantastic save in the 45th minute, when Claes Backman sent off a good shot on target. Verneque FC's Dida Taffarel proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 46th minute of the match, managed to save Verneque FC from getting a goal against them. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 4-0.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Paulinho Afonso was the one to do the kick off. After 51 played minutes Verneque FC got a freekick which was hit by Josué Aparecido. Dida Taffarel showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Claes Backman in the 54th minute of the match. Dida Taffarel was left in no man's land by his defense there! With a couple of smart ball manuevers Paulinho Afonso in the 77th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Dida Taffarel saved Verneque FC from getting behind. 79 minutes into the match, Catanduvense FC's Délio de Barros sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Dida Taffarel narrowly saved just below the crossbar. 81 minutes into the match, Catanduvense FC's goalkeeper Rogelio Thomas had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Cesinha Dias. 82 minutes into the game, Catanduvense FC's Paulinho Afonso nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot.
