Guardaparque's goalkeeper really had to stretch himself to stop the ball from crossing the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Newells Old Boys's zone, Victor Urtsin stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Desiderio Estevez came out of the goal and Victor Urtsin tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 25 minutes into the match, Newells Old Boys's Rolando Arnas shot a high long ball. Guardaparque's goalkeeper was lucky when the ball hit the right post and out. A collision led to Guardaparque getting a freekick after 30 minutes play. Reynaldo Ascencio hit a great ball. Desiderio Estevez came out of the goal and Victor Urtsin tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Desiderio Estevez showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Victor Urtsin, who was totally free with the ball in the 35th minute. After 36 minutes of play, Newells Old Boys's Martin Admon made it 1-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Apolo Ekhi was left in no man's land by his defense there! In the 40th minute Julio Admon shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Apolo Ekhi saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The fans had the chance to grab some refreshments as the whistle went for half-time. The score stood at 1-1 after a close first half.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Julio Admon made a kick off.
