Albérico Cortez received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 34th minute. Fernando Aguilera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Daniel Amaral showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Silvestre Castelo Branco, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. Luís Barata fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Daniel Amaral having to interfere. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Silvestre Castelo Branco in the 43rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Daniel Amaral prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Daniel Amaral stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Silvestre Castelo Branco's shot from short distance in the 46th minute. Daniel Amaral showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Tarcísio Teves, who was totally free with the ball in the 48th minute. After the first half S.L.Benfica were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

After 52 played minutes S.L.Benfica got a freekick which was hit by Silvestre Castelo Branco.
